Welcome! Selamat Datang!
I’m a global historian passionate about the modern history of Southeast Asia, with a particular focus on how Muslim societies have shaped and engaged with global systems. My research blends Global History, International relations and Islamic Studies exploring how communities in the Global South have pushed back against Eurocentric views to imagine world orders centered on justice, equality, and sovereignt
As a Senior Lecturer at the State Institute for Islamic Studies Lhokseumawe, Indonesia, I’m dedicated to inspiring my students to view history through a critical lens that connects the past to contemporary challenges. I encourage them to move beyond the “clash of civilizations” narrative, particularly when examining the complex relationships between Muslim and non-Muslim societies. This perspective allows students to see history as a nuanced interplay of ideas and movements, rather than a binary conflict.
Currently, I’m working on a book project based on my Ph.D. research from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. It explores Indonesia’s efforts to challenge the Eurocentric global order from the late 19th to mid-20th century, examining how movements like the Acehnese resistance to Dutch colonialism, pan-Islamic networks, and Indonesian nationalist movements sought global justice that transcended borders. This project not only celebrates Indonesia’s rich history of worldmaking but also offers valuable insights into the ongoing discussions of fairness and inclusivity in today’s world order.
When i am not immersed in Academia, I enjoy spending quality time with my two kids—whether baking, playing, or diving into science experiments. I also share bite-sized educational content on Instagram (@baiquni_hasbi), where I simplify complex ideas and make them accessible for Indonesian audiences. This allows me to bridge the gap between academic research and everyday life, making knowledge more relatable and engaging.
